Detoxifying more Martian water

Recent discoveries on Mars by Mars Express show that some of the water ice may extend as deep at 3700 meters below the surface. This is much higher than previously detected.

But perhaps more importantly, a new method to detoxify the Martian water has just been selected by NASA’s Innovative Advanced Concepts program.

A Merry Christmas to Beagle 2’s 20th Anniversary

It’s exactly 20 years since Beagle 2 touched down on Mars.

Mars in Ultraviolet by MAVEN

NASA’s MAVEN orbiter has taken several views of Mars in the ultraviolet light (which is light beyond what our eyes can see). Doing this can reveal new features or systems taking place on the planet.

The images were taken at different times in Mars orbit. Here we present the images next to generated images of Mars for easy comparison.

Airbus LOOP and Super-heavies

LOOP is a new space station concept from Airbus. It is designed to be multi-purpose so could be used in orbit around the Earth or the Moon, or even on long-term journeys to Mars.

It has an eight meter diameter and three floors, meaning it will fit perfectly in one of the super-heavy launch vehicles such as SpaceX’s Super-Heavy (which just had its first successful test launch this week – congratulations!). It would launch in its complete form, so as soon as it is in space it is capable of supporting astronauts.

The upcoming and the previous CHASM workshops

It is now only two weeks to the next CHASM workshop, but there’s still time to buy tickets. It takes place with Astrolands, an analogue habitat in Northern Spain situated deep in a cave system! Check it out: https://marssocietyuk.org/events/the-second-chasm-workshop/.

But this post is about a visit to the analogue habitat during the previous CHASM workshop, LunAres in Poland. (You can also learn more about the workshop part here).
