Perseverance Discovered Potential Biosignature

The Perseverance Mars rover has discovered patterns of minerals that could be a biosignature – something that indicates life may have existed there now or in the past.

The minerals were located on an ancient river valley, carved by water rushing down it. The area on Mars is called Cheyava Falls.

Minerals, and the patterns they have formed, are similar to those on Earth created by life, which is highly suggestive of a biological origin on Mars. But, more research is needed to confirm this hypothesis.

Some of these deposits should make it on to future Sample Return missions, meaning that that material can be transported back to Earth where more advanced analysis could be done to confirm the origin.
