Mr Myles Johnson is presenting his paper titled ‘Systems Engineering for the Mars Sample Return Mission’. In June 2019, Myles graduated from Loughborough University with a first class Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering. During his studies he undertook an internship year within the Civil Space Department at Lockheed Martin UK (LMUK), working under European Space Agency (ESA) projects including Spacerider; a reusable un-manned spaceplane, and Mars Sample Return. Myles was the recipient of over 10 accolades, most noticeably the Royal Aeronautical Societies (RAeS) N E Rowe Award, two LMUK Spotlight awards for a presentation at ESTEC on the Mars Sample Return Mission, and the Basil FW Powell Memorial Prize. He attended an ESA Academy workshop on the Rosetta mission in Belgium, and received a scholarship from the UK Space Agency to attend the ESA Summer School in Austria studying ‘sample return missions to small solar system bodies’. Myles is currently working as a Graduate Systems Engineer at LMUK and is helping encourage and support young people within the space industry acting as a member of the RAeS Space Group Subcommittee ‘Horizon 2021.
